Abstract

This article presents a hermeneutic-based essay on the dilemmas of higher education expansion in the Brazilian context. Based on teaching experiences situated in Brazil and Venezuela, the text draws on distinct Latin American university experiences to problematize the contemporary
meanings of expansion. Drawing on everyday experiences in university teaching, it examines how the expansion of access, often associated with the idea of democratization, coexists with processes of institutional precarization, reconfiguration of the meanings of education, and symbolic
reorganization of inequalities. The argument developed here is that expansion does not eliminate social asymmetries but rather displaces them into the interior of the university itself, where they are expressed through the hierarchization of knowledge, the intensification of academic work, and the diffusion of an individualized promise of social mobility. The article concludes that these dilemmas reveal a persistent tension between the social function of the university and its growing subordination to rationalities oriented toward efficiency, performance, and market logic.
