Abstract

The article reviews the subject of dietary fibers, draws up a definition and presents the main components of dietary fibers and analyzes the terms “crude fiber” and “dietary fiber”. lt shows the classification of dietary fibers with regard to the solubility of their componentes in water and sums up the physiological effects of both soluble and unsoluble fibers. It lists the main sources of dietary fibers and emphasizes the role played by such nutrients in the protection, maintenance and recovery of the human health.
