CITY PLANNING FOR CHILDREN - SUPPORT FOR EVIRONMENTAL STUDIES OF RECENTLY DEVELOPED NEIGHBORHOODS

Abstract

As the history of a city is registered, areas related to the o/dest settlement usually have greater value, especial/y in contemporary cities. New data concerning the most recent urbanization zones are forgotten and weaken in the image of the city itself. Taking into account that a better involvement of teachers and students in the local communities might contribute to the interaction of future citizens with the environment they tive in, a study was developed aiming to observe and analyze the educational practices related to city and environmental issues in recently deve/oped neighborhoods, in thirty five schoo/s in the region of Campo Grande, in the southeastern area of Campinas. Some schools have tried to recover the history of their neighborhoods and there is the necessity of supporting them. Teachers have great interest in obtaining material to help them teach environment studies. The majority of these teachers do not tive in the neighborhoods where they teach, and they do not personally know lhe regional problems, the structures of occupancy, characteristics of the population, who are generally migrants. We suggest the preparation of teaching materiais and the creation of a Center for the memory and Regional Studies.
