Abstract

This research has the objective of understanding how students' participation takes place, and which social and pedagogic elements are present, when environmental matters are approached from the standpoint of teaching and learning of Mathematical Modelling. The research was developed through a qualitative approach with students from Junior High Schools, in Pub/ic School in the town of Rio Claro, SP, Brazil. The pedagogic action, developed under the perspective of Mathematical Modelling included topics such as: Water, Waste, Electric Power and Oeforestation, with the execution of some models, among which: population growth forecast and writing the mathematical function for calculating the amount to be paid for water and power consumption in the town of Rio Claro. Environmental subjects discerned a field that is rich in applications, allowing for the integration between students' day to day experiences with Mathematics and simultaneously creating a wider awareness towards contemporaneous society environmental problems.
