ASPECTS OF A SCENERY: THE SIXTIES AND SEVENTIES AND MATHEMATICS TEACHERS EDUCATION IN BAURU (SP) AND SURROUNDINGS

Abstract

This paper presents some faces of a doctoral dissertation whose main object was to understand the constitution of what nowadays is called Mathematics Education, focusing specifically a region in São Paulo State (Brazil). This dissertation follows the methodological approach known as Oral History. Data for analysis came from eight interviews with math teachers effectively in charge of school classrooms in 60 ·s and 70 ·s. When discussing this collected data, what we cal/ed ''tendencies" (final categories risen from a qualitative data analysis) could be detected. Such tendencies were: the importance of railroads; the 5.692/71 law (with which some important reforms on schooling system were dane); the Modem Math Movement and, finally, the so-cal/ed CADES - a program developed in early 50 ·s to prepare secondary school teachers. These tendencies al/ow us to understand some aspects of Math teachers education and how teachers practices were implemented in those decades. ln this paper we discuss more closely two of these tendencies: the Modem Math Movement and the CADES program. ln our point of view, facing those understandings, re-building how Math Education took place in a specific region, is a contribution for Brazilian History of Mathematics Education and an effort to re-think the "classical" approach to this history, which could give us some other ways to write it.
