Jacques Maritain’s purloined letter – the Intransigentism between the Fascism and the Maritainism in the Brazilian Northeast in 1937

Jacques Maritain’s reply to the attacks he received in Brazil after his trip to Argentina took the form of a letter, which was distributed to the Brazilian press by Friar Sebastião Tauzin. This religious man also took care to defend the Catholic philosopher through lectures and writings, however, the investigation of Tauzin’s performance reveals, in addition to the care with Maritain’s image, a whole plot that has not yet been researched that involves events, intellectual, religious and the formation of regional, national and international networks. The attacks on Maritain were supported by a group of religious and intellectuals housed in the Centro Dom Vital de Pernambuco and supported by Fronteiras magazine, the main periodical of the Brazilian Catholic right. Examining this magazine, the daily newspaper A Ordem de Natal, the Diário de Pernambuco and O Jornal, a daily newspaper from Rio de Janeiro, allows us to recognize, in an unprecedented way, the stimuli received by the intellectuals of Fronteiras, the traction exerted on them by the Centro Dom Vital de Pernambuco and record the transformations of intransigentism in Pernambuco and Natal, whether in the flirtation with fascism or in the early adherence to Maritainism.
