The irony of Marduk: the mythical imagination and the sphere of the political in Ernst Cassirer

The present study stops at the last paragraph of Ernst Cassirer’s The Myth of the State in which the author, to conclude his critical argumentation of mythical thought -which dominates the entire text- resorts to the Babylonian myth of Marduk and Tiamat. Therefore, we are interested in showing how the irony of appealing to a myth to conclude an argument intended to undermine it indicates, on the one hand, a problem with the intellectual enterprise in which Cassirer is engaged, and on the other hand, the dilemmas of the criticizes mythical thought in general.
