Abstract

The article provides an analysis of the classic myth of Icarus from th perspective of Gaston Bachelard's concepts of time, dreamlike verticality, and their ontological determinations. We emphasized the original nature of his approach which, while including several references to mythological imagery, did not accord particular salience to this example. Icarus the youth, in this analysis, lives in the time of the instant, where there is ontological and poetic ecstasy; Dadalus, his father, on the other hand, lives grappled to daily routine, in the time of the duration, therefore horizontal. It is precisely because it is removed from the plot of daily routine that we can afirm Icarus flight to be essential: he lives in the vertical reality of the instant and, thus, can let flow his ontological determinations.
