Abstract

This paper situates the problem of scientific realism against the background of the main epistemological doctrines, explaining
precisely how it arises. After presenting and classifying the main positions which have been taken regarding the problem,
some of the chief arguments for and against scientific realism are identified in Descartes's The Principles of Philosophy.
