CHAMADA 2027 | Dossier: Zygmunt Bauman and Peter Berger: interpreters of religion in modernity
In 2017, sociology lost two big world figures: Zygmunt Bauman (on January 9th, with 91 years old) and Peter L. Berger (on June 27th, with 88 years old). Due to their long lives – both were born in the 1920s – they spent much of the 20th century and the first two decades of the 21st century not only as citizens of the world, but also as interpreters of contemporary global society. It is worth remembering that Bauman and Berger left their countries of birth and settled in others, where they developed their personal, family and professional lives, as well as visiting many countries as teachers, researchers, lecturers, speakers etc. Although they were not only sociologists of religion, they both researched and wrote about religion – and not just a little, especially in the case of Berger. For that reason for 2027, that is, 10 years after the death of Bauman and Berger, the Reflexão Journal, of the Postgraduate Program in Religious Sciences (PPGCR) of PUC-Campinas, makes available to the academic community (from now on, in the form of a call for submissions) the dossier “Zygmunt Bauman and Peter Berger: interpreters of religion in modernity”, with the aim of keeping the work and legacy of the two intellectuals alive. Because the field of Religious Sciences is interdisciplinary and plural, we welcome articles on the study of religion from a wide range of disciplines that have received and continue to receive theoretical, epistemological, methodological and empirical influence from Bauman and Berger.
