Abstract

One hundred and ten children enrolled at the outpatient department of pediatrics at  "Escola Paulista de Medici na" - Medical School - São Paulo (Brazil), were studied with the intention of finding out the nutritional condition, the duration and the type of breastfeeding, and their probable relation with morbi dity during the first year of age. The breastfeeding frequency analysis obtained from the use of "life" charts showed that, at six months of age 60% of the children were breast-fed, and 40% of them were still having exclusive breastfeeding. The average breastfeeding time was between the 7th and the 8th month of age, and the one of exclusive breastfeeding was between the 3rd and the 4th month. The weight increment (growth)-which was above the reference standard (NCHS) - can be attributed to the longer breastfeeding period and to the regular medical care. The frequency of respiratory illnesses was around 20% and theywere diagnosed yet in the first semester. The diarrhea showed a peak of 8.2% in the second semester. The children's breastfeeding period was longer than the ones mentioned in other similar studies. A protective effect of human milk was observed upon diarrhea during the first three months of age
