THE IMPORTANCE OF READING TO THE STUDENT'S PERFORMANCE IN FUNDAMENTAL EDUCATION

This article summarizes the main results of a research on the reading habits of the students in the 4th and 8th schoo/ years from Fundamental Education. Firstly, it discusses reading from the Reading Socio/ogy perspective, considering the socio-interactionism and the method of discourse analysis. lt also focuses on the opposition between the theoretical reading and the one practiced at school. Besides, it presents a categorization of the students in the 4th and 8th school years according to the respective reading rates. Finally, it shows the correlation between the reading rates and the students performance, considering the available data of Portuguese Language in connection with other subjects. The interpretation of the data suggests typical profiles according to the reading habits and also the final products obtained from the reading/school performance processes, which should be interactive.
