Abstract

This paper consisted, in the first moment, to present and analyse ai! definitions about mental retardation presented from 1908 to 2002. ln a second moment, the paper presents in a more detailed way, the definition proposed em 1992 by AAMR and then, discusses the positive and negative reactions provoqued by this definion during the ten years it was in operation. Also, the paper presents other alternative definitions proposed during this period. Finally the paperpresents and dicusses the definion proposed em 2002 by AAMR and discusses it with the definition proposed in 1992. The paper concludes that it is sti/1 too early to evaluate how this new definition of mental retardation wi/1 influence the Special Education practices and that in Brazil this issue has not even been discussed.
