Apresentação e análise das definições de deficiência mental propostas pela AAMR - Associação Americana de Retardo Mental de 1908 - 2002

Resumo

Este trabalho consistiu, num primeiro momento, na apresentação e análise de todas as definições de retardo mental surgidas no período de 1908 a 2002. Num segundo momento, o trabalho apresenta, de forma mais detalhada, a definição proposta em 1992 pela AAMR e depois apresenta e discute as reações positivas e negativas em relação a ela durante seus 1O anos de vigência, bem como definições alternativas surgidas nesse período. Finalmente, o trabalho apresenta e discute a definição proposta em 2002 pela AAMR e a compara com a definição proposta em 1992. O trabalho conclui que ainda é muito cedo para avaliar como essa nova conceituação de retardo mental influenciará as práticas em Educação Especial e que no Brasil esse assunto não foi sequer discutido.
