Pelágia, uma prostituta santa do monasticismo antigo

Este ensaio é uma apresentação do texto Vita Pelagia, uma hagiografia que narra a vida de uma prostituta que se transforma em monge entre os séculos IV e V d.C. Seguindo o texto, o presente ensaio busca mostrar de que modo as transformações pelas quais passa Pelágia, a heroína de nossa história, se deve a um trabalho pessoal que pode ser pensado como típico do monasticismo desse período. Nosso objetivo é buscar ressaltar o quanto essa personagem é apresentada como uma figura liminar, isto é, que se situa entre diversas formas específicas e seus nomes: a prostituta Margarete, a noiva de cristo Pelágia, o monge eunuco Pelágio. Tratase de sublinhar o quanto ela é uma figura em metamorfose, que se transforma ao longo de sua vida, habitando fronteiras de gêneros e de papeis sociais.
