Abstract

The historical industrial peripheries of large cities have been undergoing urban transformation over the past 30 years, leveraging opportunities derived from industrial relocation process throughout the second half of the twentieth century. Large scale urban projects are redeveloping old industrial sites, ports and railway areas, changing the characteristics of the neighborhoods established in the late 19th century. Urban transformation involves demolitions that tend to eliminate preexisting traces on the land. However, the study of different cases helps us recognize how preexisting elements may dramatically influence the redevelopment process. Small properties with different owners and existing roads represent a significant constraint for urban redevelopment. This paper, based on a study of redevelopment projects of Paris e Barcelona, explores the influence of preexisting land division and land property in the final urban design as well as the stages of redevelopment to show the significance of traces of the past in the development of future city projects.
