CITY SUSTAINABILITY: AN URBAN IMAGE ANALYSIS OF THE RIVERBANKS OF PROPRIA, SERGIPE, BRAZIL

Abstract

The aim of this paper was to analyze the methodological procedures for the construction of more sustainable urban environments. The focus of this analysis is the intervention of urban regeneration projects along the riverbanks, particularly along the
banks of the São Francisco river in the municipality of Propriá in the state of Sergipe.
First, we analyze the importance of image analysis for urban sustainability, which is followed by a short description of the methods used. Second, we discuss the
two following methods for image analysis: Image Analysis Method developed by Kevin
Lynch; and the Semiotic Method for Environmental Perception by Lucrecia D’Alessio Ferrara. Then we analyzed the application of the methods for the development of a partial diagnosis. Finally, the final considerations provide guidelines for developing a more sustainable reality of these environments.
