Resumen
Rogers enunciou a hipótese de que uma terapia efetiva acontece quando o terapeuta é congruente no relacionamento com o cliehte,experiencia uma aceitação não-julgadora do cliente e uma compreensão empática da estrutura de referência do cliente e quando o cliente (que está ansioso e vulnerável e cuja experiência organísmica está incongruente com o conceito de self) percebe a consideração positiva incondicional e a compreensão empática do terapeuta.
Embora a maioria dos terapeutas aceite as condições que Rogers especifica na sua hipótese como necessárias, poucos as consideram suficientes. As pesquisas dos últimos 50 anos tem, em geral, confirmado a teoria mas ainda falta prová-Ia: principalmente devido ao excessivo interesse no terapeuta e falta de interesse no fenômeno da psicoterapia efetiva.
Este artigo examina vários aspectos do fenômeno que inclue a técnica usada, a cultura, crenças, o relacionamento terapêutico e o cenário. O autor incita a um exame preciso deste fenômeno com uma atenção especial para aspectos que hão tem sido pesquisados cuidadosamente, tal como a capacidade de auto-cura do cliente.
