Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess if the variables “network relationships”, “neuroticism” and “coping strategies” would have an effect on the variable “life satisfaction”, in a sample of young people, and to present a descriptive profile of the sample for each of the variables. A total of 502 students, from 10 state schools in Porto Alegre, Brazil, took part in this study. The average age was 16.6 years (standard deviation = 1.4 years). The instruments used comprised: a socio-demographic data questionnaire, Multidimensional Life Satisfaction Scale for Adolescents, Network Relationships Inventory, Coping Strategies Inventory and Neuroticism Factorial Scale. A multivariate variance analysis and linear multiple regression were carried out. The most significant results showed that the participants demonstrated a good level of life satisfaction, used a variety of coping strategies and that friends and mothers seemed to exert an influence on them. The best predictor for the level of Total Life Satisfaction was the factor Depression in the Neuroticism Factorial Scale.
