Abstract
This work had as its objectives: (1) to survey the motivational reasons that lead Brazilian professors in Graduate psychology to perform research and to publish; (2) to analyse what factors lead some professors not to publish, and (3) to trace the profile of the professors in the Graduate Programs, in regard to age sex, marital status, number of children, place of graduation, etc.
Fourteen of the eighteen courses that were contacted answered a questionnaire for a total of 102 answers. Almost ali respondents stated that they engaged in research and published their data, in the last 3 years. Eighty-six percent of them published in Brasil and 35% published overseas. The factors that most contributed to their publishing articles were: the desire to help science to develop and the need for personal accomplishment. Professors who did not publish stated that this was due to lack of time to wríte and difficulty in having access to journals.
