The aim of this study was to
determine the author number, the participation of female and male
authors, and the average number of articles published per year in the journal Coletânea do ITAL (1980/1989). The study covered 129 articles of which 14 were reviews and 115 scientific. With regard to authors, it was found that 42.85% of the reviews had a single author whereas 57.14% hadmorethan one,ofwhich the predominant number wasthree. For scientific articles 7.82%were single author and 92.17%
multiple, with a predominanceof3 authors (33.91%). With regardto the participation of male and female authors, of the 28 authors involved in the 14review articles,9were femaleand 19male.ln the caseofthe 366
authors of the 115 scientific articles, 170 were female and 196 male. The average yearly publication of reviewand scientific articleswas4.6 and 11.5, respectively. It is concluded that the articles tend to be
produced by a team involving research staft from the same institute, and some times researchers from other institutesofthe sameinstitution.
Multiple authorship may involve multidisciplinary areas of science,
engineering and foodtechnology, the backgroundand speciality ofthe researches, the organogram, as well as the institute's activities. It is concluded that the 9reater participation of males is probably due to the factthatthe institution,overthe periodanalyzed, contained more male researches.
