Land parceling and the creation of open public spaces for collective use in Tijucas (Santa Catarina)

This article studies the formation process and the configuration of open public spaces of collective use in a city in Southern Brazil – Tijucas, Santa Catarina. We evaluated the allotments as the central defining features of the public spaces, insofar as they establish the road layout, the squares, and the green areas in the urban fabric. We defend that the squares and green areas constitute possible enablers of socialization and collective appropriation. Readings were carried out regarding the location, form, and use of the squares and green areas offered in the lots approved in the city from 1979 to 2017. Observations in the field examined the access conditions, the use of the ground in the neighborhood, the treatment of the spaces, and the copresence of people in these places. The conclusions indicate that the more recent the squares and the green areas, the more problematic their positioning and configuration in the urban areas of the city is found to be.
