The urban heritage and the conservation charters

This article is a brief review of the history of heritage’s enlargement, from isolated build‑ings to urban heritage, through the analysis of the main heritage charters, and where ur‑ban heritage is mentioned by the main theorists. Related to the charters, it is intended to compare specially the “The Washington Charter” of 1987 with “The Valleta Principles for the safeguarding and Management of Historic Cities, Towns and Urban Areas”, a document adopted by XVII General Assembly of International Council on Monuments and Sites, on November 28, 2011. The latter intends to update the first and its prin‑ciples are scarcely spread in Brazil. The focus of the article is the analysis of the interna‑tional heritage charters, with one or another analysis of the Brazilian heritage charters, and raising some questions to reflect on and discuss the Brazilian preservation context.
