CHILDREN AND FAVELA SPACE: THE COMPLEXITY OF SPACE IN CHILDHOOD INTERACTIONS

The idea behind this article is to learn what is the urban experience of children that live
in slums. How does the child react to its environment? Where does the child play? How
does the child build its character from the environmental interaction? The goal of this
article is to disclose the complexity brought by the use of the out-door environment of the
slums from the child’s intervention in its own process of development, when they adopt
certain areas of the slums as their playground. The Rocinha slum, in the city of Rio de
Janeiro, is our case study. The investigation is grounded on data collected by informal conversations with the children, photographs and children drawings, oriented as a qualitative and participative research, based on previous studies from Tuan, Fischer e Morin. We analyzed the games that use the special out-door environment of the slums, transforming these places in affective environments, reorganizing the uses of this environment. We considered said interaction as playing a roll in the person/child’s development – slum/slum, from the moment that the child notices itself as part of the environment. It is the knowledge of a peculiar urban environment that limits social practices and mental representations developed by slum children, that bring in their dreams the image of what should be, from their perspective, the urban world.
