Abstract

The aim of the article is to discuss an urban design approach that can be based on a new
conceptual and creative logic. Within this context, it is possible to expand the cognitive
operators of the architect and, at the same time, transcend the rationalist principles of
understanding and planning cities. The parametric paradigm applied to urban design
is a new approach to urban projects based on the use of standards and rules. The objective
of this method is to facilitate dialogue between the different participants in the design process and allow the development of flexible proposals, who are able to respond
to various changes. The parametric systems differ from the traditional digital design in
a sense that it maintains the ability of changes during the entire design process and
generates and tests several versions within a controlled environment. Thus, the aim of
the paper is to relate the concept of compact city proposed by Rogers and Gumuchdjian,
1997 and the parametric paradigm to address a sustainable urban design logic that seeks
to respond to the increasingly complex demands of the contemporary city.
