Abstract

At present, landscape architecture is based on several landscape philosophies, a wide possibility of design concepts that seek to respond to new modes of intervention of public spaces, as well as interpret the dynamic identity of the twenty-first century society. The
objective of the study is to discuss  ontemporary formal landscape structuring of public urban spaces for leisure and from which artistic thought those spaces were designed. The aim of the paper was to adopt a historical and conceptual approach to an analysis of these contemporary philosophies of landscape architecture. A number of public spaces, developed from the second half of the twentieth century, are listed for discussion with the purpose of understanding how the various languages of design organize the socio-spatial relations of public spaces, regarding their compositional elements and programs. Finally, a formal and functional analysis of the various philosophies, their conceptual definitions, meanings and contributions to landscape architecture in recent decades are discussed.
