RECONSIDERING THE HISTORY OF AMERICA: ARCHITECTURE, MYTH AND UTOPIA

Based on the Walter Benjamin’s philosophy, we discuss the importance of the discourse
of the reconsideration of American History in the architecture of Paulo Mendes da Rocha, based on two issues: the Marxist historical proposition about the responsibility for the development of one’s own fate and the valuation of America, here understood as
myth and utopia. The thesis of Walter Benjamin proposes that the historical dimension is the foundation for any possible knowledge and the foundation for critical reflexion of the discourse united to a particular place and a particular intention of the project, the latter being ultimately political. The ideas of the architect elucidate the problem of freedom, self-determination through creativity, and the organization of policy issues which, ultimately, endeavor to clarify misunderstanding and they are a source that intends to transform suffered history into esteemed history: a substrate — anima — for the architectural project and the city in America.
