Abstract

During the period called “Rubber Cycle” in Belém do Pará, North of Brazil, the architect José Sidrim developed several projetcs throughout the city, having his relevance recognized by his residences. His work has already been related to the eclectic movement spread in Europe in the 19th century and in Brazil in the end of this century and the beginning in the 20th century. This period is coincident with the “Rubber Cycle” in the city of Belém. In this context, it is the intention of this article is to analyze the residence Guilherme Paiva, designed by the architect above mentioned, in search of pragmatic aspects related to room distribution, flow, circulation, and comfort present in the elaboration and composition of the project. We also seek to establish a relation between the architectonic composition of this house and the theory developed by the architect and theorist M. Leonce Reynaud in his “Traité d’architecture”, since a copy of this publication was found in the private library of José Sidrim. Hence, it is intended to verify the presence of aspects mentioned in Reynaud’s “Traité” in this work of Sidrim.
