DEINDUSTRIALIZATION AND SAFEGUARDING OF INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE: PROBLEM OR OPPORTUNITY?

The deindustrialization process some countries have been facing offers a valuable opportunity to solve the main problems caused by this situation, particularly with the safeguarding and valorisation of its industrial heritage. Although it is not easy, especially when it comes to old industrial areas or urban industrial regions in decline, it is possible to reverse these situations through appropriate strategies, contemplating the reuse of its industrial heritage, which might be used for multiple purposes — cultural, services or housing. Based on several examples of reuse of such industrial heritage — in Spain, Britain and Germany — the problems and issues raised by each of them are analysed, paying close attention to adopt the most
appropriate strategy to achieve the proposed goals.
