BUNGALOW-SUBURBS: THE INTERCONTINENTAL CIRCULATION OF A NEW HOUSING CULTURE IN THE BEGINNING OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

In the beginning of twentieth century, new questions about modern life were moving from country to country, in the various continents. Sanitation, housing, planning and health are some of the subjects that were being discussed in the places they reached. This circulation of new ideas was possible, besides other causes, due to the increasing international trade, that led to various kinds of exchanges: commercial, scientific, cultural and social. With the rising economic growth, the expanding urbanization and the development of cities, suburbs arose in country areas in the end of the nineteenth century. A form of dwelling that came from India — the bungalow — becomes the characteristic urban house, a privatized environment, planned for the nuclear family, opposed to public space. This article analyses the migration of this bourgeois housing culture from Britain to the United States and then to Brazil, focusing on the city of São Paulo. With the increasing growth of cites, suburbs became the solution for housing location, mainly single-families. Many garden-suburbs were developed for the middle class, having as a model the precursor Jardim America from the company City, created in the 1910’s.
