ESTUDO TRANSCULTURAL DOS EFEITOS DA PRIMEIRA IMPRESSÃO NO JULGAMENTO DE HABILIDADES DE MULHERES PROFISSIONAIS
Abstract
The present study investigated the influence that civil status and the way dressing have on the first impression created by professional women on those who judge their abilities on several areas. It was also investigated how the sex and nationality of the judges affect their evaluation of women. Te subjects (72 men and 82 women from the Washington area) were tested by means of photographs of 8 women dressed in a professional or feminine fashion, and described as married or single. Data from these American subjects were compared with that of Lipp et alli (1983) 80 men and 80 women fron Brasil. Results indicated a significant difference between the two samples and between the judgment of male and female USA subjects. The American sample rated the women consistently higher rates than men. Evaluation in some areas was affected by both civil status and way of dressing, while others were not affected by either.
