Abstract

Emotional labor is a process of managing the expression of emotions and internal feelings based on the emotional demands in the workplace or work environment. This study adapted (Study 1) and validated the Emotional Labor Scale, developed by Brotheridge and Lee (Study 2), on a sample of 521 Brazilian performing artists, who were mostly musicians and theater actors, with a mean age of 39 years. Methodological procedures were followed to adapt and apply this scale. For the data analysis, the sample was subdivided into two groups. Exploratory factor analysis (Sample 1) and confirmatory factor analysis (Sample 2) were conducted. Despite the loss of items, the results provided confirmatory evidence of the tripartite model of emotional labor: emotional demands at work, strategies for superficial acting and deep acting. It is suggested that the scale can be applied to other occupational contexts.
