Abstract

Objective
The aim of this research was to evaluate resin microleakage after rotary instrument
finishing on different occasions.
Methods
Standardized class V cavity preparations were made on 40 sound permanent molars with the occlusal margin in enamel and gingival margin in dentin. The samples were restored with composite resin and divided into 4 groups (n=10): Group 1) immediate finishing; Group 2) after 48 hours; Group 3) after 1 week; Group 4) after 1 month. The finishing procedures were done with 1112F diamond
burs for 20 seconds (10 in the mesiodistal direction and 10 in the occlusogingival
direction). The specimens were immersed in methylene blue and sectioned
buccolingualy through the center of the restoration. The software TPSDig 1.38
(2003) was used to evaluate microleakage in photographs magnified 5x. The
Mann Whitney test was used for statistical analysis.
Results
The finishing that was done immediately and after 48 hours presented
significantly greater marginal infiltration in the gingival walls than the finishing
done after 1 month (p<0.05).
Conclusion The finishing done after 1 month with rotary instruments reduced the microleakage in the gingival walls of class V preparations in permanent molars.
