Abstract

Objective
To characterize the cognitive status of elderly diagnosed with depression and how it is influenced by age and education.

Methods
The study included 34 individuaIs aged 60 years or more clinically diagnosed with depression attending the Geriatric Psychiatry Outpaüent Clinic of the Universidade
Estadual de Campinas hospital. A structu red interview was used for collecting sociodemographic data and administering the Cambridge Cognitive Examination
Results
The mean age and years of formal education of the sample and respective standard deviations were 70.76t5.35 years and 2.85t2.92 years, respecüvely. Most participants
were females (61,7%). The mean Cambridge Cognitive Examination score and standard deviatíon was 67.15t17.34, The test score was associated with education level
(p<0.00001 and r=0.74832) but not with age (p=0.9294). The mean scores of most subscales of the cognitÊve test were linearly correlated (Spearman) with education level
Conclusion
Education level influenced the subjects’ performance on the neuropsychological test
more than age.
