Abstract

Six thousand, two hundred and forty-five liveborn babies were studied at the Hospital e Maternidade  Celso Pierro, at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas, from January, 1992 to January, 1995. The parameters analyzed were birth weight and its adequacy for the gestation age, sex, and mother’s characteristics, The study showed 41.1% (2 566) of newborn babies with birth weight below 3 000g and 12+1% (753) below 2 500g (newborn babies with low birth weight. Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) was present in 2 L 7% (1 324) of the 6 245 liveborn babies and in 81.5%

Of the newborn babies with low birth weight. Nineteen point four percent of the mothers studied and 25.2% of the mothers of newborn babies with Low birth weight were smokers. It was concluded that infants born at the Hospital e Maternidade Celso Pierro presented a frequency of low birth weight higher than that observed in Campinas City, with a high incidence of IUGR. This characterizes the hospital as a unit serving a neonatal population of high risk.
