Abstract

Of patients with primary tumors of ovary and breast, selected amongst 287 women with ovarian cancer attended at the Centro de Atenção Integral à Saúde da Mulher, Universidade Estadual de Campinas from 1986 and 1997, are related. Median age at first diagnosis was 52 years old (minimum of 44 and maximum of 64 years). Four (case 2, 3, 4 and 5) among the five breast tumors were ductal carcinoma and all presented a grade III of diferentiation. Regarding ovarian neoplasm, three presented papilliferous adenocarcinoma (case l, 3 and 4) and the case 2 presented an endometrium adenocarcinoma. The case 5 presented an undifferentiated adenocarcinoma, but limited to one ovary and with lymphonodal extention. All ovarian neoplasm were diagnosed in advanced stage. Two cases were synchronous and three cases were metachronous. In two metachronous cases breast cancer was diagnosed firstly and in the other case the first diagnosed tumor was the ovarian carcinoma. The median interval between the first and the second tumor in these three cases was 38 months. Although rare, primary breast and ovarian cancer can coexist in the same woman and physicians need to be aware of the presence of adnexial mass in women with breast cancer and breast node in women with ovarian neoplasm. Treatment must be complete for both neoplasms.
