Malignant Glaucoma After Cataract Extraction With Intraocular Lens Implant

The authors describe the case of a 72-year-old patient who developed malignant glaucoma, a rare complication of intraocular surgery, nine months after extracapsular cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation. Ultrasonic biomicroscopy was useful in aiding diagnosis. Clinical treatment was ineffective in reducing intraocular pressure. Capsulotomy and anterior hyaloidotomy with YAG laser were effective in relieving acute glaucoma. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the clinical signs of malignant glaucoma early and institute appropriate therapy to obtain good results.
