Characterization of mites in sofa dust samples for homes in Campinas, southeast Brazil

The presence of mites was evaluated in dust samples from 52 sofas from homes in the city of Campinas, SP, using optical microscopy. The results demonstrate mites in 90.4% (n=47) of the samples. A predominance of mites from the Pyroglyphidae (mainly Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus) and Glycyphagidae (mainly Blomia tropicalis) families was observed. A greater number of mites was observed in samples from houses (n=26) compared to apartments (n=26) (p<0.00005), and when carpet (n=19) was present, when compared to wooden flooring (n=19) or ceramics (n=14) (p<0.04).
