Evaluation of the interaction between home environment ano sensitivity to mites in atopic patients residing in Londrina, Brazil

Objective
To evaluate the possible interrelation between environmental factors and contrai methods, and the mite sensitivity of atopic patients.
Methods
Atopic children (n=24) and adults (n=21) were requested to fi/1 in a specific questionnaire about the structural and environmenta/ conditions of their home dwellings, in the city of Londrina, PR, Brazil. They were also submitted to the skin prick test for mites and house dust extracts, to evaluate immediate sensitivity Statistical analysis was performed to find out possible corre/ations of the test results' with other data.
Results
Adequate environmenta/ contrai was rare/y observed in analyzed dwellings. Skin prick test resu/ts showed a high sensitivity, even in children, for the extracts of house dust, and the mites D. pteronyssinus, D. farinae, and B. tropicalis. No corre/ations were observed between sensitivity and environment contrai, or other factors analyzed.
Conclusion
Mites are important al/ergens for atopic patients in Londrina. Additional efforts should be carried out to improve local people's knowledge concerning allergen contrai methods, such as the regular use of mattress and pi/low covers.
