Abstract

Objective

The objective was to evaluate the body composition, the presence of insulin resistance, and lipid profile changes in a group of patients with Turner Syndrome, in Brazil.

Methods

This transversal study of 35 patients with Turner Syndrome, evaluated body composition by anthropometry and bioimpedance; the serum measurements of cholesterol, triglycerides, High Density Lipoprotein, glucose, and insulin, were analyzed using the Homeostasis Model Assessment, the Quantitative lnsulin Sensitivity Check lndex, and the glucose and insulin ratio.

Results

The age ranged from five to 43 years (17 ± 8 years). Twenty patients were pubertal and 16 required estrogen replacement. One patient presented body mass índex Z-score +2 above standard-deviation; 19 had waist-hip ratio above 0.85. The correlations between lipid profile and age, ar puberty, ar estrogen replacement, were not observed; nonetheless, the triglycerides' values were higher among patients with induced puberty. AI! patients' results presented normal índices, according to the Homeostasis Model Assessment and the Quantitative tnsulin Sensitivity Check !ndex, except for three patients, whose glucose-insulin ratio was below 7.

Conclusion

This group of patients didn't show signs of either insulin resistance ar actual obesity, but they present some fat accumulation in the abdominal region. Few changes were observed in the !ipid profile, independently of the age and the onset of puberty.
