BEHAVIOR OF THE TWO WEST INDIAN MANATEE (Trichechus manatus manatus) IN A SYSTEM OF NATURAL ENVIRONMENTAL CAPTIVITY IN BARRA DE MAMANGUAPE, PARAIBA STATE, BRAZIL

Studies about the two West Indian Manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus) in natural environmental captivity were developed in the Aquatic Mammals Center/National Environmental Authority in Barra de Mamanguape-state of Paraiba-Brazil, with the purpose of finding out about these animals’ behavior in that environment type. In the period of December 12, 1999 to November 22, 2000 their behavior was registered, with new observations being made in the period of July 10 to October 10, 2001, with the objective of discovering if modifications occurred in the animals’ conduct. These later data were not included in the statistical analysis. The feeding behavior (“at the surface” and “at the bottom”) was that which was noticed with greater frequency about these Manatees (named Guape and Guajú). On the other hand, the “scratching” behavior was just carried out by the Guape and not by the Guajú. The results obtained in 2001 facilitated the evaluation of the changes in the behavior of the animals.
