FIRST RECORD OF KATHLANIIDAE FAMILY TRAVASSOS, 1918 (COSMOCERCOIDEA), NEMATODES, FOUND IN NEO-TROPICAL PRIMATES ALOUATTA GUARIBA CLAMITANS (ATELIDAE), IN THE RIBEIRÃO CACHOEIRA FOREST FRAGMENT, DISTRICT OF SOUSAS, CAMPINAS, SP, BRAZIL

Abstract

The fecal samples of the red howler monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans) (Primates, Atelidae) inhabiting a fragment of the seasonal semi-deciduous Atlantic Coastal Forest were investigated for the presence of intestinal helminths. This fragment, the Ribeirão Cachoeira Forest, occupies 234 hectares in the district of Sousas in Campinas, SP, Brazil. Samples were collected on a monthly basis from August 2003 through July 2004. A total of 112 samples were collected and analyzed for parasite identification. Qualitative sedimentation methods (Hoffman, Pons and Janer and Rugai) and floating methods of Faust and Willis were used. Only helminths of the phylum Nematoda, in stages of ova, larvae and adults, were observed. No other helminths were found. Among the identified nematodes, female adults of the Kathlaniidae family Travassos 1918 (Cosmocercoidea) were more predominant than other nematode parasites with a high prevalence of 69.2% of the total samples collected in 7 of the 12 months of collection. These nematodes were identified following the Vicente, Rodrigues, Gomes and Pinto nematode identification key. This nematode is the first recorded observation of the Kathlaniidae family parasitizing neo-tropical Primates of the genus Alouatta.
