Abstract

Twenty one species of juvenile serranids were collected from the Southern and Southeastern regions of Brazil using several methods, some being collected from the stomachs of tuna and related species caught with longline fishing gear and others with manually operated nets at the beach. Both the young and adults were collected to aid comparison in identification. The presence of juveniles in the stomachs of tuna and related species reveals the reproductive strategy of some inshore serranid species in using the offshore tropical waters of the Brazilian Current as nursery grounds, while others were found in estuaries.
