Abstract

With the aim of facilitating gonadal maturation in the common snook, Centropomus undecimalis, in captivity, experiments in the 2007/2008 and 2008/ 2009 reproductive seasons were performed in Florianópolis, in the state of Santa Catarina. ln the first period, 54 braoders were induced to maturation by means of Silastic®MDX4-421O implants containing 4mg.kg·' 17 a-methyltestosterane (17a-MT) or 4mg.kg·' (17a-MT) + 50µg.kg·• luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue or without hormone (contrai group). ln the following repraductive season, 36 males received chranic treatment, alternating between follicle stimulating hormone and human chorionic gonadotrapin (hCG), applying five doses (once a week) while two females received chronic treatment with six doses of hCG (once a week). ln March 2008, the number of animais spermatizing was significantly higher than in February (p<0.05), however there was no significant difference (p>0.05) between the treatments. The hormones caused an increase in milt volume, it being higher in males treated with 17a-MT + luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue. ln April 2008, the praduction of milt decreased in ali animais except in the contrai group. The data suggest that the implanting of 17a-MT and 17a-MT + luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue accelerates the spermiation process. ln March 2009, the sma/1 number of animais spermatizing and the low milt volume indicates low efficiency of chranic treatment; on the other hand, in females, it permitted the start of vite//ogenesis, as witnessed by the presence of vitellogenic oocytes (150µm) after the third application of hCG.
