Abstract

The tree species Bowdichia virgilioides Kunth, a native of the Brazilian cerrado and popularly known as the sucupira-preta, belongs to the leguminous family ln addition to having medicinal principies, it is also used as a hardwood for civil construction, in frame and panei manufacturing and also has the potential for use in the planting of trees in city streets and in landscaping projects. The species is in danger of extinction due to difficulties with seed germination and early seedling development. ln view of these aspects, the aim of this work was the evaluation of treatments to overcome dormancy and the morphological se/ection of viable sucupira-preta seeds. The experiments consisted of soaking the seeds in water, heat treatment at 30ºC and at BOºC and chemica/ scarification through the immersion of the seeds in concentrated sulfuric acid. The effects of adding activated carbon, gibberellic acid, light and seed morphology (colar and size) on the germination were also evaluated. The results showed that the chemical scarification with acid significantly increased the percentage of germination, indicating that the seed testa is impermeable to water. ln addition, the production of phenolic compounds by the seed was detected, its action being diminished with the addition of the activated carbon. The selection of seeds based on morphological characteristics, however, proved to be crucial in obtaining healthy, viable seeds. The orange-colored seeds, regardless of size, showed the best germination rates.
