Abstract

This study aimed to identify and characterize the damage caused in Vachellia caven seeds (Molina) Seigles & Ebinger (Fabaceae) (Espinilho) by a granivorous insect. In January 2012 were collected 72 legumes, directly from six trees of different ages, chosen randomly, in the Espinilho State Park, Barra do Quaraí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. After harvesting, the legumes were sent to the laboratory where they were measured the variables, length and width, and later correlated with the number of seeds attacked, healthy and the number of hatched insects. Then they were deposited individually in containers covered by a screen. After the emergence of adults was quantified the number of healthy seeds, predated seeds and empty seeds, contained in the legumes. The substrate of the seeds consumed by the insect was obtained by the difference in weight between 100 seeds healthy
and 100 seeds predated. From the data collected, it was found that Pseudopachymerina spinipes (Erichson, 1833) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) was responsible for the attack of 15.6% of a total of 1,552 seeds evaluated. No correlation was found between the number of specimens that emerged, healthy and damaged seeds and the size of the legumes. The
consumption of bruchine was 41.3% of the seed substrate. Thus, his attack compromises seeds germination, irreversibly, affecting the natural regeneration of espinilho.
