Peer Review Process

Manuscript assessment

The manuscripts submitted to the journal in conformation to its editorial policy and instructions to the authors will first be assessed by the editors, who will decide upon the scientific merit of the contribution. The editorial process will only begin if the manuscripts conform to the instructions. Otherwise, they will be returned to the authors for amendment and inclusion of letter or other documents, before they are sent to the Editorial Committee, and later, to the ad hoc referees for merit assessment.

The author(s) are strongly recommended to have their manuscripts reviewed by professional linguists (reviewers and/or certified translators of Portuguese and English) before submitting texts that may contain mistakes and/or morphological, syntactic, idiomatic or stylistic errors.

Manuscripts with mistakes and/or morphological or syntactic errors will be returned before they are submitted to assessment of their merit and convenience of publication.

The manuscripts that are approved in this phase will be sent to ad hoc referees selected by the editors. Each manuscript is sent to two referees of known competence in the manuscript theme. If the two referees disagree, the manuscript will be sent to a third referee.

The journal uses the double blind review process, that is, both the authors and the referees remain mutually anonymous. Therefore, the authors are asked to do whatever possible to avoid their identification in the body of the manuscript.

If any of the referees report a conflict of interest, the Editorial Committee will send the manuscript to another ad hoc referee.

The referees can give one of the following three opinions: a) full approval; b) conditional approval; and c) full refusal. The author(s) will always be informed of the result.

The final decision regarding the publication of the study will be made by the editors who also have the right to make the changes they see fit.

Accepted manuscripts: accepted manuscripts may return to the authors for approval of changes made during the editing and normalizing process, according to the journal’s style.

Proofs: proofs are sent to the authors for correction of typing mistakes. The proofs must be returned to the Publishing Center within the stipulated deadline. Other changes to the manuscript will not be accepted at this time.
