Resumo

Não é geralmente reconhecido o fato de que, ser integrante de um grupo, pode alterar a consciência individual e resultar em condutas tanto destrutivas quanto construtivas. Sugere-se que formas menos dramáticas de estados de transe, que têm sido tradicionalmente utilizados nas religiões e funções sociais, na redução de tensões, curas, educação, na tomada de decisões comunitárias inteligentes e mesmo na transcendência da individualidade estão presentes nas reuniões de grupo modernas. Como grupos atuais podem beneficiar-se destes estados, e uma estrutura teórica para estudos futuros são aqui sugeridos.
