Abstract

Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of musculoskeletal pain and the most
common disease in at least ten countries. Although physical therapy has an
important therapeutic role in this disease, the indications regarding the use of
heat, especially deep heat, diverge. The present study reviewed and analyzed the
literature on the use of deep heat therapy as a physical treatment for osteoarthritis.
The method consisted of searching the SciELO, Lilacs and PubMed databases for
Portuguese and English articles published between 1988 and 2009 that met the
inclusion criteria, using the keywords osteoarthritis, short waves, ultrasound,
microwave and heat therapy. A total of 15 articles were found, compared and
analyzed. In conclusion, the use of deep heat therapy improves the symptoms,
but its physiological effects do not necessarily affect the progression of the disease
in a positive or negative manner
