The present paper focuses on the issue of the form of slavery that existed in the heart of Minas Gerais in lhe 18th and 19th centuries. lt was previously assumed that the viability of slavery depended on lhe existence of plantations with the objective of expo, ting. The economy of Minas Gerais in the 19th century, after lhe decline of mining, was supposed to be stagnated and the contingent of under-used slaves was expotted to other states. After the research on this issue published by the Martins brothers, it was recognized that the contingent of,slaves in Minas Gerais had effectively grown substantially in an economy characterized by diversification, self-sufficiency and isolation in relation to externai markets. The possibility of existence of a different type of slavery, with few links to lhe externai market, has been verified.
